Question. 1. Elucidate the objectives of Logistics. Briefly explain the types of logistics.

a) Objectives of Logistics.

Answer: The concept of logistics is fairly new in the business world. The theoretical development was not used until 1966. Since then, many business practices have evolved and logistics currently costs between 10 and 25 percent of the total cost of an international purchase. There are two main phases that are important in the movement of materials: material management and physical distribution; Materials management is the timely movement of raw materials, parts, and supplies. The physical distribution is the movement of the firm’s finished products to the customers. Both phases involve every stage of the process



b) Explanation of the types of logistics

Answer: In order to increase the sales as well as the market share, many companies advertise that their goods will perform well over a period of time. The customer is, therefore, led to believe that in case he buys the product of that company, he is assured of satisfactory performance of the product. But at the same time, it is very much obvious that the company cannot assure the satisfactory performance of each and every of its product which is sold in the market. Few of the products sold may not perform as advertised over the specific period of time.



Question. 2. Elaborate the functions and contribution of Supply Chain Management (SCM). Explain the factors influencing Supply Chain Effectiveness

a) Functions and contribution of Supply Chain Management (SCM)

Answer: Supply chain refers to all the facilities and processes used in supply of goods and services; from procurement of raw material, through manufacturing operations, up to delivery to final user, and supply chain management (SCM) refers to Management of all operations within a company impacting and interfacing other sections of the supply chain to improve entire supply chain performance.

The main functions and components of SCM include:

·       Defining business boundaries and relationships
·       Managing demand and supply
·       Logistics


b) Factors influencing Supply Chain Effectiveness

Answer: Gaining a competitive advantage in international supply chains requires matching the value‐adding activities of a chain with the unique comparative advantages offered by diverse nations that make up the chain. To do this, a supply chain manager must identify and control the factors that influence the performance of the chain in each of the three areas, namely, procurement, processing and distribution. Controlling these factors requires, among other things, setting up suitable information systems. This article

Answer: Inventory must be viewed as a positive contributor to corporate profitability. To that end, management must determine when various items should be ordered, how much to order each time, and how often to order to meet customer needs while minimizing associated costs.

Answer: A warehouse management system (WMS) is a software application, designed to support warehouse or distribution center management and staff. They facilitate management in their daily planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the utilization of available resources, to move and store materials into, within, and out of a warehouse, while supporting staff in the performance of material movement and storage in and around a warehouse.



b) Basic functions of warehouses.

Answer: Transportation management systems manage four key processes of transportation management:

·       Planning and decision making – TMS will define the most efficient transport schemes according to given parameters, which have a lower or higher importance according to the user policy: transport cost, shorter lead-time, fewer stops possible to ensure quality, flows regrouping coefficient, etc.



b) Factors affecting freight cost.

Answer: Whilst transporting commodities through oceanic routes, ocean freight plays the most important role among other factors. The levy of ocean freight however depends on a number of factors. This is why transporters hiring shipping vessels need to be careful when it comes to understanding the rates applicable.

Business transactions that are often performed thousands of times in one day form the basis for these key figures. An information system therefore has to access aggregated data in order to gain a quick overview.

The information systems in logistics are flexible tools for collecting, aggregating and analyzing data from the operative applications (Purchasing, Sales, Production, Inventory Controlling, Plant Maintenance, Quality Management/Inspection Processing).
