While this is important practice for large manufacturers and corporations, regularly scheduled maintenance is equally important for small businesses. Items that require regular maintenance include computer hardware and software, as well as company vehicles and any regularly used mechanical tools and equipment.

c. Codification of spare parts

Answer: Codification / cataloguing is basically an identification system for each item of the inventory. There are often three broad approaches to developing a suitable identification system :

1.Arbitrary approach: As the name suggests ,this approach does not use any design for codification. Rather , as and when an item is received by Stores in its receiving bay, a running and unique serial number is assigned to it. This number becomes the code of the item for subsequent use at different stages. While this system is the easiest one

Answer: For many years, benchmarking has been a widely recognized business practice to research ideas, methods, practices, processes and implementing their best features. Here’s how it can make a true difference for the success of maintenance efficiency and effectiveness.

While we enjoy having our machinery up running – the maintenance of it has not always been the most popular nor well-prioritized part of manufacturing. Back in time, it was a common practice to wait for equipment to fail, and then repair it.


Question. 6. Describe various types of preventive maintenance.

Answer: Maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) involves fixing any sort of mechanical, plumbing, or electrical device should it become out of order or broken (known as repair, unscheduled, or casualty maintenance). It also includes performing routine actions which keep the device in working order (known as scheduled maintenance) or prevent trouble from arising (preventive maintenance).
