Q. 1.Write a long note on the major characteristics of Epics (there are 10).

Answer: 1. Characters are beings of national importance and historical or legendary significance: Odysseus takes on a larger-than-life quality in the story.  These are not the deeds of a normal man.

2. The setting is grand in scope, covering nations, the world, or even the universe: The Odyssey is a journey that involves a large number of places and nations.  Odyseeus, himself a prince, must concern himself with the suitors of other great houses once he returns home.

3. Action consists of deeds of great valor and courage

Q. 2.Write a long note on the Romantic age of English Literature. Elucidate on the features of this
period as well as the most acclaimed poets of this era.

Answer: The period typically called Romantic varies greatly between different countries and different artistic media or areas of thought. Margaret Drabble described it in literature as taking place "roughly between 1770 and 1848", and few dates much earlier than 1770 will be found. In English literature, M. H. Abrams placed it between 1789, or 1798, this latter a very typical view, and about 1830, perhaps a little later than some other critics. In other fields and other countries the period denominated as Romantic can be considerably

Q. 3. Write a long note on Types of Poems (4 marks) and the major genres in Poetry (6 marks)

Answer: Poems are collections of words that express an idea or emotion that often use imagery and metaphor. As you are studying literature, you will likely notice that poems come in many, many different forms. As you read and perhaps write your own poems, it is helpful to know the different kinds of poems.

Types of Poems

Q. 4. What is a traditional ballad (5 marks)? Write a critical appreciation of the ballad ‘The Wife of theUsher’s Well’ (5 marks).

Answer: The traditional ballad belongs, and has always belonged, to that oddly named “little tradition:” of popular culture, as opposed the “great tradition” of the cultural elite, provided we are aware that by "popular tradition” we mean the culture shared by all members of a community, including the cultural elite, who are so distinguished by having access to their exclusive “great tradition” as well. As part of this little tradition the ballad is neither the debris... of some earlier phase of the great tradition--it has never in its recorded history been exclusively the possession of the cultural elite--nor did it become “folklore” until

Q. 5. Differentiate between Naturalism (5 marks) and Epic theatre (5 marks).

Answer: Epic theatre was proposed as an alternative to the Naturalism developed by Stanislavski. Brecht was not trying to pretend that what he put on stage was real life. He was not concerned, for example, that a scene in 'Galileo', in a renaissance palace, had to take place in a believable imitation of such a palace. He wanted his audience to be aware of what was really happening -- that they were watching a play. Epic Theatre is supposed to keep an

Q. 6. Write a long note about Robert Browning and the dramatic monologue.

Answer:A dramatic monologue is a poem in which only one person speaks (Algeo). When discussing the poetic form of dramatic monologue, it is rare that it is not associated with its usage attributed to the poet Robert Browning . He has been considered the master of the dramatic monologue. Although some critics are skeptical of his invention of the form, for dramatic monologue is evidenced in poetry preceding Browning, it is believed that his extensive and varied use of the dramatic monologue has significantly contributed to the
